Took a taxi into Drumnadrochit village to visit Urquhart Castle. This is a splendid ruin overlooking the loch, and much seen in Scottish tourist brochures and on calendars. We were there for a light lunch, but did not have long enough to visit the Loch Ness Experience, which gets good reviews. What we had seen while in the harbour (known correctly as 'Loch Ness Harbour') was a regular succession of small boats laden with tourists off to find Nessie. Sad to say, we had no sightings ourselves during our sail the length of the loch. We set off and once again struggled with moderate but violently swirling winds which change direction drastically with every new contour of the hills, managing most of it on a sort of a run, with half a Genny out. We only covered some 8NM into Loch Dochfour, the last of the Cale lochs, and onto a pontoon at Dochgarroch Lock. We had been advised by text from our earlier Dutch 'buddies' that a visit to the quirky shop/post office/teashop/antique store/restaurant was an absolute must, so we walked all of 50metres from the canal and booked in for dinner. The place (and its proprietor) lived up to the expectations, and we enjoyed both the browse and the superb home-cooked meal (bring your own bottle, as no licence). Then back to Vega for what was effectively the last full active day of our summer's cruising.
