After discussing the various routes with fellow campers we decided to head to Alice Springs via the West McDonnell Ranges and visiting some of the gorges. The quickest way to undertake this trip was by tackling the Mereenie Loop. About 120kms of this route was an unsealed road. Although our van is a semi off road vehicle, we thought that as long as we took it easy we would be ok. 1 broken glass, 2 broken reflectors, some wire damage under the van, a few stone chips on the checker plates, and a little bit of red dust later and we arrived at our destination!
I must say the word 'resort' has been used quite loosely at Glen Helen Resort. On first viewing you would find it run down and tired, on further viewing you would find it steeped in history and amazing. Still not a resort, more like a homestead.
Had our first cooking fire for the trip and very much enjoyed left over lamb jaffles looking over the Glen Helen Gorge (part of the Finke River - the oldest river in the world). Couple of camping neighbours visited our camp fire before retiring to the van.
