Kalgoorlie, full of history, gold mining and big machinery,
To arrive at Kalgoorlie we spent about three days crossing the Nullarbor which was a very long but interesting drive. The very flat country, for kilometre after kilometre varied a lot in plant life with colours changing all the time. a lot of signs showing kangaroos, emus and camels were around but not much wildlife to go with them.
Another one of our free camp sites was at a place called Baxter Rest area about 65 klms west of Caiguna. It was well off the road with quite a lot of other vanners there so security again was ok.
After a good nights rest we made an early start and arrived at Norseman at approximately 1130.
Norseman !!!!!! What can I say. It's a very small town at the junction of 3 highways. It's the major refuelling stop for hundreds of kilometers in any direction. Diesiel $1:75. Dearest so far on this trip.
An overnight stop at Noresman, and we were on our way early heading for Kalgoorlie.
After booking into the caravan park we headed off to do some sighting. Being Sunday strangley most of the places were closed, so got the general layout of the land and decided to call it a day and hit the info centre today (Monday).
Kalgoorlie is well worth a visit with museums, heritage trails, old buildings dating back to the late 1800's and of course lots of mining areas that you can actually get close up to and see the action. There is some huge machinery down in one of the open cut mine pits which is called the Super Pit and claims to be the biggest in the Austrailia.
The times the company is going to blast some of the rock to begin the process of gathering the ore and processing is published and we were lucky enough to be able to see the blasts happening from a very good vantage point. (some pics in the pictures section).
After a bit more looking around the town it was time to fillup ( fuel now $1.28 per lt) head back to the van park and prepare to move on tomorrow, which should see us back down to the coast at Esperance for a bit of salt air and sea water and a few days stay maybe more to have a good look around that area.
