Geraldton. Population approximately 40,000 people.

Another interesting town with lots of history and a beautiful coastline which holds many shipwreck secrets going back to the Bativa shipwreck.

There is plenty to see such as old convict ruins, catheralds and other buildings, but by far the most interesting is the memorial to the sailors who lost their lives when the HMAS Sydney II was sunk by the German raider Kormoran in 1941 approximately 126 miles off the coast of Geraldton with the loss of 645 Australian lives. The ships were finally discovered in 2008 and in the Geraldton musuem there is a video which details the search and discovery. The roof of the main part of the memorial is made up of 645 metal birds representing the lives lost from the Sydney II. One of the photos in the album section tells the story.

Once again the memorial, set on Mt Scott, conjures up thoughts of what the sailors from both side were going through as they fought the battle.

After another couple of days exploring what the area had to offer, time came to move on north and to the warmer weather.
