Arrived at Amazing Albany on Wednesday 17th.
We soon discovered the endless things that this city and area has to offer so decided to stay till Friday next week. More fantastic coastline with bays and inlets around every corner, but one of the best things to check out is the National Anzac Centre and the nearby lookouts all centred around the departure of the convoys of ships which left from the harbour at Albany taking the troops away from their homeland and into an uncertain future from which many, as we know now, would never return.
After a climb to the top of Pardre White's lookout you can see over the town and the harbour, seeing the same view that Pardre White would have seen everytime he climbed to this same spot to see the departing ships and give his blessing.
A visit to the nearby National Anzac Centre is not to be missed and covers in detail the ships in the convoys and the troops that the carried.
It is an interactive display which is well set out, very informative and has voice recordings of soldiers with there experiences when leaving their homeland and whilst in Gallipoli and the Western Front.
Inside the building there are very large windows from where you can look out over the harbour, while listening to some of the stories. It is very sobering and thought provoking trying to imagine what was going through the minds of the troops as they left their homeland.
Older buildings are able to be inspected which also hold a lot of related history.
Another track leads up to Convoy walk which is lined with all the names of the ships which were in the two convoys.
Once at the top of Convoy walk more views of the harbour can be seen from different angles.
After leaving the National Anzac Centre we followed the coastal drive back to the caravan park for a well earned rest after a good days sight seeing.
Tomorrow, off again in different direction (still in Albany) loooking to spot a whale or two hopefully.
