Another lay day in Gialos and Harani, each to their own, which included swimming at Nos beach for us all.
7pm we caught the local bus from the harbour up to the old town Chorio - 'old', think anytime forward from 5th century BC when the acropolis of Syme was built. Bits of the castle built by the good old Knights of St John in 1407 have also survived, every generation of inhabitants doing a recycle job to the present day.
The island was renowned for its shipbuilders - Jason's Argo built by one of them, and for sponges - the Ottoman Court harem swore by them.
So over the centuries these various piles of rock have been abandoned, 'renovated' and reinhabited, still happening now. Almost as many churches as homes!
So, the mapless intrepid explorers wound their way through rock piles and ruins, coming across the odd 'modern' home sharing walls with ruins. You can understand why the electricity is a mess overhead, and poly pipe bobs up in the oddest places. Sewerage? Hate to think. Property titles must be a nightmare. Photos in album.
Needless to say the alleyways and steps were aimless, the chapel at a high point I had climbed to a previous day our only landmark. Em did point out she was pleased she hadn't worn heels, given she was dressed elegantly for dinner on our way home!
2 hours later.....emerged at the restaurant we had eaten in last night and my crew mutinied, a good place to do so for Hazel's last dinner.
Food? Sea bass, lemon juice, oil, tomato & avocado salad, the green beans again, baked aubergines stuffed with fetta, leeks and tomato, and chicken & pork souvlaki. The chef treated us to some Greek firewater and orange peel in syrup, and we managed a decent Greek Sauvignon Blanc blended with a couple of traditional varieties I have never heard of & can't translate.
Oh dear countdown to departure.
