One night's bush camp in Goreme, then 3 nights there at Kaya Camping.
On our way along the silk road towards Cappadocia, we stopped at a Caravanserai that had been well-preserved and partially restored. These are along the silk road about a day's ride apart so that traders wouldn't have to camp along the way.
We drove into the weird landscape of the region of Cappadocia late in the afternoon and stopped to admire the weird fairy chimneys the soft rock has eroded into. A lot of the towns around here have houses carved into the rock pillars.
The campsite has an underground area carved out which was quite cozy once the fire was burning - some people slept down there and it provided a nice location for partying!
Among the activities we got up to here (apart from partying) included a day's tour around the sights of the area like Uchisar Castle, Pigeon Valley and the fairy chimneys, as well as one of the underground cities that is in the area. It was quite dark and damp down there but there are 6 floors of tunnels in the one we visited, Kaymakli underground city. People could retreat in there when they were under attack.
Shane and I also went, with about 10 others, for a balloon ride over the area one morning. It was amazing! You don't even feel like you're going up and down, although we did go up to over 800m above the ground at one point! Very beautiful and well worth it.
One of the nights there we went to a Turkish cultural evening where we ate delicious meze and baked lamb, and were treated to whirling dervishes, lots of folk dancing and also a belly dancer, who made some of the guys get up and dance with her. A very enjoyable evening!
Also making a debut appearance was the orange hat which the new "d*** of the Day" has to wear for 24 hours. The first recipient was one of the Steves who had an incident involving spilling of chocolate milk, fruit and eggs (not at the same time). Rosie also received the honors one day for managing to vomit in her own shoes. Now that takes skill.
