More beautiful mountains to drive through today. We have been finding cheap kebabs along the way but today we found the cheapest kebabs yet - only 1 TL for a chicken one and 1.50 for a lamb one, plus you get a free Ayran (yoghurt drink)! The kebabs here are a bit different to others we've had so far - they use a oval-shaped bread that is flat but about half inch thick, rolled lengthways into a long tube with the meat and a bit of salad in. Very tasty but not quite as filling as an English kebab.
We reached the turnoff to Nemrut Dagi early in the afternoon and started the long climb up to the top of the mountain. Once we reached the café at the top it was a further walk up a steep path with steps to the summit, where there are the ruins of a funerary temple and man-made tumulus (which is basically a big pile of gravel). There were huge stone statues standing in the temple - now the blocks have tumbled down and all that is left is some huge stone heads among the other rubble.
The descent to the main road took a couple of hours for the truck. When we got to the Euphrates River we found the ferry had only just gone and we'd have to wait an hour for the next one. As we were waiting, a middlesized truck came tearing down the hill and drove right into the water. We realised as he drove past that his brakes were stuffed.. they were smoking and smelled terrible, and he was driving into the water to cool them off! He rolled up one trouser leg then jumped into the kneedeep water, shoes and all and started throwing water into the wheels. We thought it was hilarious and Lee and Luke later decided to award him d*** of the Day in his absence.. they had tried to get him to wear the hat to get a picture but he wouldn't do it. He entertained us while we waited anyway :)
The ferry arrived and the other trucks and cars were loaded on, then finally we squeezed in. It was only a short ferry trip across the river but by the time we got over the other side it was already getting dark and we ended up camping on a hill overlooking the river.
