Today we went to the CN Tower. We had a good day for it because the skies were completely clear.
For a long time it was the tallest building in the world. I think now it's around the 3rd. I'm not very good with heights but even walking to the tower I was thinking 'it's not as big as I thought it was going to be'. This made me feel a bit better about going up it, until we got in the lift and discovered that 2 sides were glass and there 2 smallish glass panels in the floor! Also it went pretty fast- 15 miles an hour! It took less than a minute to reach the first viewing area. The building itself is 553 metres high. We paid for the observation deck and glass floor, and also for the skypod. We did the indoor observation deck first which is 351 metres up. I didn't feel at all scared surprisingly. I think this is because we were inside. The views of the city were amazing although we couldn't really go the whole way around because there was a cafe in this section. Next we went down a flight of stairs where they have two sections of glass floor. It is very difficult to describe to someone who hasn't done it, the feeling of peering 342 metres down to the ground. Just looking through it without stepping on scared me. I really wanted to walk on to it but my body wasn't listening to my head- my legs just wouldn't move. Even though I could see lots of people standing, sitting, laying on it, (one guy even jumped up and down on it!) I still thought I will be the one to fall through it if I step on (It's a very strange feeling).
Eventually I managed to place one foot on the glass but still the rest of my body would not follow and I had to take my foot back off again. I thought if Kelly and I linked arms we could do it together but she couldn't do it either! I walked around for a minute or so and then went back to try again. My palms were almost dripping with sweat but I really wanted to be able to say I'd done it. It is probably the scariest thing I've ever done but eventually I managed to step on. To get a decent photo of you on it though you really need to be sitting or laying, so that was the next challenge. I managed to do it though, and even Kelly was able to sit on very briefly for a quick photo. What's also really difficult once you're on the glass is actually walking along it whilst looking down! You still feel like you're going to fall through with each step. It took a while but I eventually did this too! (albeit very briefly). I was so incredibly proud of myself for doing it!
After this we went up in another lift to the skypod. This was an extra $5.00 to do, and is the tallest observation point in North America. From the first observation point the skypod is an extra 100 metres up. You are able to walk the whole way around up there and while the views are amazing it didn't really feel any higher up (although obviously it was) so I felt like that particular section was a waste of money.
After this we grabbed some lunch and then headed back to the hostel. We've booked our next hostel too, and will be making our way to Ottowa- the capital, on Friday.
