It was Kelly's 25th birthday today so we wanted to have a nice day. We'd already decided that we were going to go to the ROM- Royal Ontario Museum, which is the 'only museum in North America to house art, science and archaeology under one roof'. The building itself is amazing- it's a really old traditional looking building and then jutting out of the front is an aluminium and glass section in a really modern design. What made me want to go even more was the fact that they currently have the exhibition of 'The Warrior Emperor and China's Terracotta Army'. Kelly and I had both heard about it and seen it on tv but didn't know a great deal about it and were rather naive and ignorant to think that the ROM (as massive as it is) would be holding all the soldiers!! I was astounded to discover that almost 8,000 sculptures were created! They cannot be certain of this figure however as excavation is still ongoing. The main exhibition is in situ in China but the ROM had a selection of these warriors and other artefacts for their exhibition. It was amazing to see, especially as they had been made over 2,000 years ago and were only recently (1974) discovered (and by accident!) It was really interesting and at least I now know more about the Terracotta Army.
That was only one level of the museum. There were 5 levels to look around and after almost 3 hours we had to go to the cafe and grab a coffee and slice of pizza because I was flagging and could not look at another thing. This gave me a much needed boost and we then continued on. We must have been there close to 5 hours and there was a lot that we missed out!!
My favourite sections of the museum were The Terracotta Army, the section that housed all the Art Deco furniture, the Gemstones and Minerals gallery, the Glass (including paper weights and perfume bottles), and the section that had the bugs and butterflies!
It was around 5pm when we left the museum so we grabbed a hot chocolate, then had a little wander around some of the shops.
As it was Kelly's birthday we'd decided we'd go out for dinner. We came across a really nice street that was lit up lovely and was full of really nice shops and lots of restaurants. We went to a restaurant called 'Remys'. Kelly had lamb chops with the most amazing mash! and I had oriental chicken linguine which was lovely. It was pieces of chicken breast with stir-fried vegeatables- peppers, carrots, courgettes and brocoli, with linguine in a teriyaki sauce. Yummy!
After dinner we went on the hunt for a cake but had to settle for a muffin each from Tim Hortens as we couldn't find any birthday cake. I have to say though that Tim Hortens is amazing! It's a chain (so happy that they're all across Canada!) of cafes that do really nice food and drink and amazingly low prices! I think it's about the only thing that is cheap over here! Being in Canada has made me realise just how cheap things are back home!
