Canberra to Taree (585 km) A remarkably uneventful and boring drive along the freeway to Taree. Had our normal off freeway stop near Ourimbah north of Sydney for a leg stretch and loo break. Started our road trip to Melbourne today, with Albury as our target for tonight. Been a few years since we have come this way by car and the Hume highway now bypasses many of the small towns we used to stop at for rest breaks. The Dog on the Tuckerbox near Gundagai looks pretty abandoned now, superseded by the Coles Express truckstop a bit further down the road. There is something decidely peaceful about floating along the river without a care in the world. Tomaga River was the testing ground for our new toy - a Hobie Quest 11 kayak. Nice toy, easy to use and far more stable on the water than the surf ski. We took turns having a paddle up and down the river, checking out the bird life and getting a closer look at the mangroves. A chance stop at Batemans Bay Visitor Centre ended up leading us to Broulee Lookout at sunset. We have been coming to the south coast for over 25 years and didn't even know this lookout existed. We've even walked around the rock platform at the base of the lookout, just never looked up.
