Eurobodalla Regional Botanic Gardens had an Easter Fair today and I dragged the husband and kid along. Lovely day for it, beautiful weather and not too hot. Various stalls set up just outside the cafe and visitor centre, where you could buy local plants from the nursery, sausage sandwiches, homemade cakes, garden gnomes that you could paint yourself and even an Easter Bilby (he was very popular with the kids).
There are over half a dozen walks within the gardens, the longest being the Forest Track and Hill Track at 2km each. We started with the easy Deep Creek Track at 500m long. This track passes Deep Creek Pond where you can sit and watch Superb Fairy Wrens flitting around in search of insects, and descends along Deep Creek into a semi-rainforest. The amount and variety of fungi in this area was amazing. So were the damn mosquitos, never seen so many. Each time we came to a stop, the mozzies descended in swarms, ended up driving us out of the forest in a hurry (Bushman's super strength next time).
The gardens display flora found around the NSW south coast and adjacnt ranges and there is also a diverse range of local birdlife.
Next time I'll come prepared for the mozzies so I can spend longer in the gardens. It is a very nice place to relax.
