Day 6:
Wonderful blue-sky day and slightly warmer in the scheme of things. We left Quorn and headed the 40 kms to Port Augusta on our way again. More food for the starving Fonz, we are filling the car everyday and it is on empty when this happens so we worked out we are going thru $85 in diesal and another $35 in caravan costs - not cheap these days to caravan. Have to keep an eye on it over the Nullarbor as running out of fuel is not an option. Parked in Port Augusta and did some shopping then made a cuppa on the river bank whilst watching dolphins slowly and calmly meandering along, so lovely to see. Eventually left and onto Kimba for lunch after a number of hours passing Iron k*** - huge mining establishment and the many valleys and byways. The road was basically straight for 250 kms but the surrounding farm land luscious with crops, so surprising when we are so close to the desert and this is considered arid lands. When we eventually arrived in Kimba we discovered a silo art work in progress, apparently only two weeks so far but fabulous and will keep an eye on the website to see the finished work. Another 100kms to Wudinna for two nights….yay a bit of stopping for a change.
Packed caravan park with people heading east and west but we dropped off Gina and went exploring. Magnificent granite sculpture in up the road from us, really lovely. Then onto Polda Rock and Dam, wow really nice spot 10kms out of town and a nice climb for a great view. Onto Turtle Rock….which was covered in bush so not much to see. Then Mt Wudinna, this is the second largest monolith in Australia (Uluru) and my Wally climbed it for some great photos of the surrounding area. So beautifully green with grain of some type being grown we are just so gob smacked with the lushness of this area of the country at the moment. Back to our van for dinner and sleep although we are on the highway but all this fresh air just wears us out so hopefully a good night.
2000 kms so far and getting across as fast as possible at our grey nomad rate. xxxxx
