Day 4: On waking this morning Wally opened the van door and the view from my bed was of bright sunshine, vineyards and frost - well two out of three ain't bad. Wally complains of having to pack up the water hoses every morning cause of the cold and ice, his poor digits get frozen. We just heard on the radio close to our next stop was -4 overnight, really whose idea was this trip at this time of year. We headed off for another 400 kms for the day towards Morgan in SA. Stopped just before Renmark for a coffee in a park again with a frozen wind going thru us. I really quite like Renmark and we have stopped there before and explored but today was just a drive thru. Could not take advantage of the fruit stalls because of quarantine which is disappointing. We had half hour time change going into SA also. The border guard asked me to open the glove box which I started to do but he walked away with a 'that's fine' before I had it open and then he checked the van's fridge and freezer. These two items are chock a block full and he didn't seem to interested, although we are so honest anyway.
Went thru Mallee scrub land a lot whilst leaving Red Cliffs but then eventually got into vineyard areas which went for as far as the eye could see but they are so uninteresting at this time of year as just a dirty brown landscape. They seem to prune the vines differently in SA and does not look nearly as neat, machinery done as they are perfectly trimmed across the top and sides. Lunch was partaken at Banrock Station winery which we have already enjoyed on a previous occasion. Wally enjoyed a fig and leek tart with beetroot and carrot salad, groans of pleasure were coming across the table. My steak and prawns were excellent also, the nice wine we had also helped to make it a nice lunch. Onto Morgan thru Cadell and across the ferry into our caravan park. The town itself used to be a port for river traffic on the Murray, now is not much open besides two pubs on opposite corners and a caravan park.
Another day over. Love and hugs. xxx
