Day 59:
One of the things we did work out at Coffin Bay was the big roundish splats of dung throughout our caravan park were emu poo, now we will forever know and be able to show everyone that we can track emus.
Up and 'attem by 9 as we had a longish drive of 380 kms to Port Augusta. We had to drive down to Port Lincoln at the pointy end before turning north and following the side of the Eyre Peninsula to the top and then heading across country to PA. We went from farm fields to coastal plains to salt bush country and then into man made mountain territory of Iron k*** - massive and unbelievable as always.
Stopped at Cowell for lunch, trying to find café we had lunch at seven years ago, no such luck. We did find 'crap art', yes girls and boys that was what it was called. In the Public Toilets were many paintings of varying talents - for sale mind you - and although I do not use that word and the children get smacked if they do, it was 'crap'. I need to ship my paintings to this town and show what an amateur can do with a modicum of talent, my ones are strange and not to everyone's taste but sure better than this stuff you had to look at whilst whiling (spelling of sitting there a while?) away 5 minutes or so. Oh well, any thoughts of an art café with decent food for the town on the edge of a fishing community could be a business to invest in. On through Whyalla, the pink town, cause everything is coated in red dust, even the sheep are pink up to the half way mark.
Now settled into Port Augusta, the caravan park advertises as Waterfront sites on the edges of the Flinders Ranges. Yes, you can see water and yes you can see the magnificent ranges BUT there is a train line and swamp between you and iron ore trains take their own sweet time going along the line at some ghastly hour of the morning, it is off the busy highway though. Our view well it is white sandiness with 5 ensuite sites and not a tree to be seen, hot and so forth. Last time we were here the Ghan went thru whilst we were down exploring this area which was great to see but the timetable shows it went thru at 7 this morning so missed it this time.
Into the big smoke tomorrow of Adelaide….hmmmm wonder how long the excitement will last. We had to stop and some traffic lights today, my goodness what an invention, haven't seen them for weeks.
