Day 3: Survived another night of cold not nearly as bad with our extra blankie but both woke at 5 discussed the coldness and the fact it was raining and we wished it would stop dripping on our van. The song Rain on a Tin Roof has always been popular with us both but not when in a caravan and travelling. We then fell into deep sleeps until 7:30 which is so unusual for us. Yesterday morning my lovely man held my trackkie dacs up to the air con to warm them prior to my arising from bed….got to love that man.
Headed out through Deniliquin with Wally telling SAM (the GPS) that it was not the right direction but surprise, surprise technology won and on we travelled thru some ever-changing landscape. This first week is just travelling as far as we can each day to get to the Nullarbor and across as we can do this bit anytime and have seen a lot of it prior to this trip. This morning we travelled for about an hour and a half with only seeing one truck on its easterly direction as we headed west and then we spied a car/caravan coming towards us….excitement abounds. Well it nearly did in more ways than one as an almighty huge kangaroo came bounding out of bushes and crossed between the two of us. Luckily the movement caught the corner of Wally's eye and he slowed but why, oh why, in all the time it had to cross it was then. We also had a sighting of two emus to the right of us, wow says I, as one bolted across the road from the left to join them, nearly had a phfffftttt bird. Morning tea in a freezing spot on the sides of the river at Moolamein then lunch we had in a tiny town near Tooleybac , no roadside stops so we had a burger in a petrol station/store, grumpy lady who it was too much trouble and grumped at us but made a great burger. We are travelling on 'C' roads mostly today to see more of the countryside. Lots of flat plains around the back of Hay as always, fairly boring with just salt bush to see but then we came into areas past Tooleybuc where there were hundreds of acres of what we thought were fruit trees in blossom. Turns out they were 'edible nuts' whatever they may be. So very pretty in full pink flower as far as the eye could see. We are seeing so many pink and grey galahs feeding on the sides of the road and they take off as car approaches, very delightful sight, 25 - 40 at a time, but would not cooperate with my camera. Also sighting more and more hawks, kites and wedgetails hovering on the breeze, always love seeing those in the outback.
Arrived at Red Cliffs Caravan Park and immediately took off after leaving Gina to her own devices to check out the 'red cliffs' of the Murray River. Best at sunset but not a great looking arvo and very chilly wind. We could not walk close to where we wanted as tracks closed but the intrepid one climbed a fence, waited for a patch of sun and they are pretty. We are just across the river from NSW on the other muddy side but head for SA tomorrow. Wally trying to cook up all our veggies prior to the checkgates tomorrow. A whole bulb in tonight's dinner…mmmmm, we will just breathe on the quarantine guy.
So onto another day. Love xxxx
