Yesterday we went to a couple of temples in the old part of Bangkok. We had to catch the sky train down to the station by the river then the Chao Phraya express boat for about 8 stops to the pier outside our first destination, Wat Pho. We asked which pier the boat to our destination was leaving from and they pointed us to the boat waiting at the pier, we walked down and were about to board the boat when we realised it was the "tourist" boat which charges about 3 times the price for the same service. We decided to wait and eventually a regular boat arrived and we were on our way.
The temple was a short walk from the pier and was home to a large reclining Buddha that barely fit into the building that housed it. It was so big you couldn't really get all of it into one photo. After visiting the reclining Buddha we wandered around the grounds for a while then went back to the pier to catch the ferry across the river to our second temple, Wat Arun. The ferry across the river cost 3 baht which is about 10 cents Australian.
Wat Arun is a large spire covered in broken porcelain tiles and you could climb up sets of stairs to three different levels with great views across the river to the city. The stairs, especially the last set up to the highest level were very steep and the steps quite high so it was hard work getting up there. This was probably the hottest and most humid day we have had here so it was even harder work. You know when the locals are sweating that it is a humid day. We took in the views across the river and the cool breeze and then began the climb down which was harder than the climb up. Today we both have sore quads from the climb down.
We then caught the ferry, express boat and skytrain back to the hotel for a rest then out to dinner at the New Light Coffee House we ate at a few days ago. Food was good again and cheap but the service was terrible.
