Got up early, too early for breakfast at the hotel and got picked up for our trip to Macau. After our group was organised we were taken to the ferry terminal and went through immigration and boarded the hydrofoil to Macau.
We got an upgrade to first class for the trip over so had two seats on the window as we cruised through Hong Kong Harbour around to Macau. The hydrofoil didn't appear to breaking any speed records which was a bit disappointing.
On arrival in Macau we lined up at immigration and when we finally went through we gathered as a group and then boarded the bus which was to take us around Macau for the day. The first stop was the Grand Prix museum which has various race cars from throughout the Macau Grand Prix history and some interactive displays. Next door was the Wine Museum which wasn't overly interesting but you got a free wine tasting (one glass each) so I sampled some white port.
We then drove around past the Statue of Kun Iam and the Penha Church to the next stop, A-Ma Temple next to the Maritime Museum with views across the strait to mainland China. We wandered around the temple and then walked up the street to a shop selling Portuguese egg tarts which were delicious. I also had a free sample of some roasted wild boar which was also very nice!
Next we continued on past the Former Governor's Residence to the Ruins of St.Paul's and the Mount Fortress which also has the last remnants of the city walls. We took some pictures of the ruins before walking up the hill to the fortress taking in the views over Macau.
We then stopped for a buffet lunch at Casino Lisboa which wasn't too bad and then had some free time at the casino to lose money on the poker machines. While we were at the casino a thunderstorm rolled in so we huddled under cover with dozens if other groups waiting for our guide to take us back to the bus.
The rain stopped as we were driving to our last stop, Macau Tower. We took the elevator up to the observation area and couldn't see much due to the low cloud from the thunderstorm. After a few minutes the cloud began to clear and we got some nice views over Macau. We then went back down in the elevator and bought a Macau souvenir before boarding the bus and going back to the ferry terminal.
After passing through immigration we boarded the ferry (no upgrade this time!) and were on our way back to Hong Kong. Arriving in Hong Kong we went through the immigration queue again and then were dropped off at our hotel.
After a long day we had dinner and then returned to the hotel for the night.
