Today we set out on a walk around Chinatown as per the Lonely Planet walking tour suggestion. Equipped with photocopies from our guide book we caught the skytrain and the underground metro to the main train station, Hualamphong Station. From there we crossed a busy intersection and made our way to our first stop, Wat Traimit, the Temple of the Golden Buddha whose claim to fame was unsurprisingly a large Buddha statue made of solid gold. Apparently it weighs about 5.5 tonnes. Very impressive.
We then set out on a walk through the streets of Chinatown. The problem being that we completely b*****ed it up from the start by going down the wrong street and with few street signs and even fewer of those with Roman script we wandered aimlessly about hoping we'd suddenly find ourselves where we wanted to go. Short story, we never got to where we wanted to go but did get to see some parts of Chinatown that few other tourists see. Lots of old shop houses with people working pausing only to give puzzled looks at the pasty trespassers wandering down their street.
After wandering for some time and stopping now and then to see if we could work out where we were (we couldn't) we must have looked lost enough for a lady to ask if we needed some help. She then pointed us directions to the river where we could then catch the express boat to where we were supposed to end the walking tour. After thanking her for her help we managed to get to the pier to catch the boat without getting lost again, caught the boat to River City Shopping Centre which was a giant shopping centre with a lot of open space, a few shops and pretty much no one shopping there. We were a bit hungry by this time but with nothing on offer at the shopping centre we caught the boat back around to central pier and then caught the skytrain back to the hotel for some lunch.
That afternoon we went down to the tailor so we could buy some more shirts and then back to the hotel for a rest before heading out for dinner. We ate at the place we tried to find on Wednesday night now that we knew where it was. The food was good and cheap so it was worth it in the end. We had an early night as we had a 7am pick up for our tour the next morning.
