Today we went to the Pratunam Market again to buy some things then went to the observation deck of Baiyoke Tower, the tallest building in Thailand. We arrived at the tower and found the ticket office. Just as we stepped up to the window some guy comes running in and jumps in front of us. The lady behind the counter told him to b***** off and wait his turn. Nice work.
There were three levels, the first was the observation deck on the 77th floor which was very crowded with tour groups and was accessed by a single lift which was like a sardine tin. We were in the lift with a Japanese tour group and their guide. The lift had a window outside with views over the city so the Japanese tourists got very excited and started taking photos all over the place. I guess they didn't realise the view would be better at...the observation deck. We did a lap of the observation deck and then moved on to the revolving observation deck on the 83rd floor.
You had to go to the 82nd floor and then go up the stairs to the 83rd. We saw a lift on the 77th floor with a sign next to it saying 82nd floor so we got in. It was small and it seemed odd that no one was using it. We arrived on the 82nd floor and realised we'd used the staff service lift as we were now behind the bar. Back down to the 77th floor then around to the proper lift. We went up the stairs which for some reason were painted like a planetarium complete with alien statues to the revolving observation deck. This was outside the building as was a stainless steel platform that slowly rotated around the building, pretty much what it says on the label.
After a lap of the building we went back down to the 82nd floor for our drink that was included in our ticket price then back down to the ground floor. Not a simple task at all. We had to take the lift back to the 77th floor where we were confronted with a group of Russian tourists who didn't want to wait to let us out of the lift so we had to push our way out of the lift. I'm not sure if they know what "moron" means but they can google it later. We then had to take a lift back to the ground floor except the lift was full. One of the staff told us to take another lift to the 16th floor then go to the hotel's lift to get back to the ground floor which we did.
After lunch we went to Prantip Plaza which was a 5 storey shopping centre that sold electronics. Some of it genuine some of it not. Lots of pirated software and DVDs on offer but we didn't buy anything.
Back to the hotel for a rest then out to dinner at Crepes and Co. which we ate at a few years ago when it was in a different location. After previous screw ups with finding things in Bangkok we planned this one well and were quietly confident of success. We got off the skytrain and went down the street that we believed we should have and then walked hoping the side street we were after was going the be there. We walked and walked, sometimes it looked like a street but no sign to say it was, other times what looked like a street turned out to be someone's driveway. We started to get a bit concerned then finally we saw the restaurant sign. Success! Food was great, especially the dessert crepes.
