Dear Ferry-men, ticket and travel agents,
Yes! It does matter when you work in Tourism, particularly Customer Service. I know because I have. If you don't have 'people skills' then it's probably not the role for you! It's not that you don't have a pretty face or a sexy body even...you simply don't cut the mustard in this realm!
You rely on foreigners coming, going, wandering, getting lost, looking, searching and, believe it or not, asking questions, lots of questions, and guess what? Some of these questions will seem dumb to you...just go with it! We don't know where to go! (Hell! Your signage and infer structure has barely altered in 20 years!).
You have a magnificent shining Tourism product here. Maybe you just got complacent or take it and us for granted? Perhaps you are having a bad day. But just remember without us you don't have a job! Yes! I know we will keep coming and perhaps we (Aussies) are indeed spoilt for exceptional service (mostly) and I should lighten up. I will, but just know that sometimes your lacklustre attitude, dismissive behaviour and curt responsibility can take a small amount of shine off an otherwise awesome experience!
Respectfully yours,
Sensitive Long haul traveller
