Hi,
The second week of May produced that rare Scottish Phenomenon: guaranteed weather. And so it was that my good friend Donald Gillies texted me on Wednesday to see if I would be available to take a trip up to the west on Thursday for some walking to view old Scotia's grandeur.
We caught the Skye bus on Great Western Road in Glasgow's west end around 0715 and got off at the White Corries just south of Glencoe around 0930. Leaving the road we joined the West Highland Way and walked south for about 12 miles until we reached Bridge of Orchy for some well earned refreshment prior to catching the southbound bus back to Glasgow at 1520, arriving back in the city just prior to 1800.
Not a cloud was in the sky all day. The folk song known as The Massacre Of Glencoe starts:
'O cruel is the snow, that sweeps Glencoe, and covers the grave of Donald...'
More appropriate on this occasion would have been...
'Fierce was the heat, on the Glencoe beat, that reddened the face of Donald...'
Ah well, who can complain....Anyway, the West Highland Way is almost too wide to be called a hiking trail. Parts of it are the old cattle drovers roads and another part was actually the main road north for at least part of last century. The main attraction however is the magnificent scenery. I think the album of photos on this site give a fair reflection of the views experienced on this most enjoyable of days out.
I hope you enjoy them.
Take care
Murdo
