Hi,

Travelled north on 15th July to catch up with brother Donald who had taken a cottage in Letters for a fortnight as part of his Sabbatical (Highland Retreat Section). Had not been to the Letters side of Lochbroom before and a very pleasant visit it proved to be.

On the day of arrival Stacey and Chris were still present from the weekend so we headed straight off to Ullapool for the walk over to Loch Achall. The day was a bit misty after the excellent weather of the previous week but the gradients were kind and the photos should give you an idea of the landscapes. You park the car in Ullapool and walk straight out of the town, returning in a couple of hours at the most.

We headed to the Ceilidh Place afterwards and had an excellent dinner.

Chris and Stacey left on the Tuesday and Helen arrived later that evening. Donald and myself had a lazy day in the interim period.

On Wednesday we decided to head for Lochinver. It was misty and we probably didn't get the best out of landscapes which feature regularly on calendars of Scotland. However, it was virgin territory (although dad has said we passed through it when we were little). We passed Ardvreck Castle which was shoulded in the mist and attempted to walk along the cliffs to the Old Man of Stoer. We were beaten by the weather as you can see from the photos.

We did however stop in the famous Lochinver Larder Bistro to try one of their gourmet pies. Pretty good. Lamb or venison? The Lamb won out in the end. The car journey around the peninsula though Lochiner, Stoer and Drumbeg gets just about as windy as you can imagine on a single track road. Note to self: revisit on a better day!

In order to avoid starving to death completely we had dinner back in Ullapool at the Arch Inn, which I would highly recommend. Just pips the Ceilidh Place IMHO.
