I have really neglected my blog of late so thought I would write a update.
Well things are looking up in Adelaide J
I now have my credit cards finally which means I can actually afford to do things, I also have a job, some friends and most importantly a public transport timetable!
So yes my job- I now work at the Lipson St café opposite the Maritime museum in Port Adelaide. The café is really cute it is very good quality healthy food and is also a small art gallery. It is not overly busy ( except for this weekend which was crazy) and the people are really great and very friendly. I did think at first I would only last a day because I am not a natural waitress, and I have never used a coffee machine in my life. But slowly I am getting the hang of it, and have even been complimented on my flat white coffee. I am glad to have had experience in coffee making now because it's a skill that will be so useful in the future. I haven't been left on my own out front yet and I am a bit nervous because it can be a lot of work for one person. I will have to
- take coffee orders and make them
- take food orders
- run food orders
- clear tables
- make cakes
which when I am alone with a café full of people could be very interesting. As I said normally its not overly busy but this Sunday I had a phone call at 9am asking me to come in because the place was over run. the reason being it was Mothers day in Aussie land. To give you an idea when I arrived every table was full, we had totally run out of bacon and eggs and the toaster broke twas madness I tell ya. But I enjoyed it which is important. I am also doing a few shifts as a child care cover worker at Alison's school which is great because I really am missing working with kids.
There are not many of us working at the café, quite often just ne cook and one person front of house but everyone is really nice and I feel at home already. In fact I went out with the boss and another guy David this weekend for a few too many drinks, but it was nice to just have company to go out with. So far my company has consisted of Brodie the dog during the days when Mark and Mel work, which although lovely is a bit of a one sided conversation.I really cant stress how hard it is to break a social scene when you move to a new city especially if you are not working. I think in my head I thought it would be easier because of how easily my school friends settled into uni life and made friends, but the difference there is that in uni everyone is looking to make friends where as when you rock up to a new city your on your own. I had been looking into joining a sports club to make friends but most o the sports I came up with were either
-to violent ( according to Mel)
-played in a dodgy area ( according to Mark)
-to cold ( according to me)
-would involve John and Kay exiling me from the family
sooo I was left with pigeon racing.. which I doubt will attract the sort of people I want to meet.
This week should be good though. My friend Laura who did oz intro has decided to move in with her adelaidian boyfriend so I will have a fellow permanent resident in the city J who has promised to introduce me to the boy friends friends so hopefully I can meet more people that way. I am really glad she will be living here too because I will have someone to go people watch in the market with. Ohhhhh also my fellow box office bunny had arrived in Adelaide for a few weeks and we will be catching up for sushi in true box office bunny style ( abi we will think of you.) So as I said things are looking much more rosie.
