A few days ago we were heading east to Karlovy Vary In Czech republic, then i spotted Colditz on the map and we took a sharp left to Altenburg then Colditz. We did an extended 2.5 hour guided tour of Colditz - amazing. Very surreal sitting in the prisoners courtyard eating our packed lunch knowing that over 500 POW's were stuck in here with guards, barbed wire, search lights galore. The POW's ate quite well for the first few years thanks to red cross parcels. For our packed lunch we were looking forward to the the luxury of butter on our cobs for a change- we don't have butter or marg we can't carry a tub of the stuff but Donna found a small cube of butter in Netto Colditz - when we opened it though it wasn't butter but yeast!! Colditz castle was well worth a visit but Colditz town is deserted in the evenings. Lot's of coach tours arrive but only stay a few hours. Our hotel was right in the town but needed plenty of TLC. A lick of paint, hoover and duster wouldn't have gone amiss. We are glad we went (for 2 nights) but were glad to leave and find better digs elsewhere. During our Colditz tour a wedding reception was in full flow within the POW's courtyard. The bride and groom had to saw through a log together - a symbol of having to work together to make a marriage suceed. Our guide told us that getting married in Colditz is very apt as you lose your freedom in Colditz!!

Amanda Sounds like your journey is full of ups and downs in more ways than one. However, your decision to lighten the load sounds like the right one. You can enjoy the journey more now and spend more time enjoying the many interesting places along the way. Your trip to Colditz must have been fascinating. Onwards and upwards !
