Yesterday we spent the day touring around fez. It was quite interesting and a bit smelly here and there.
We went up to a fort on a hill overlooking the city. We then walked into the Medina or the oldest parts of town. There was definitely no car access. There was just hand carts and mules to move goods around the Medina. Inside the Medina we looked at a madrasa (old quranic school), hand weavers business, a tannery, a couple mosques and towers from the outside, and several other worker areas. Oh outside the Medina we also saw a pottery and mosaic Work shop. It was very cool.
We then went back to the hotel with a stop to pick up a picnic for our long van ride today. 10 hours with limited services on the road. After that I went out to the government run handicraft shop. I got a serving tray, a jewelry box, and a scarf. All hand made by handicraft students. The scarf was mostly because they keep telling us how cold it will be in the mountains.
We then went out for supper. Everyone in our group seems to be eating twice a day breakfast and late lunch. They have at least started eating late supper soup with us. Not that we are eating a huge supper just a chicken breast and couscous. Our lemon olive chicken is amazing.
Anyway this morning we are in the van at 630 on our way to the Sahara. Lhussien our guide is confident that we will get there despite two days ago another group not getting through the mountains because of weather.
