Today we went Genovesa Island, this was around an 11 hour boat ride from Pyerto Ayora which we did overnight. It was really rocky and I didn't get much sleep as I felt quite ill, but once we stopped moving it was a lot better! We had moored in a volcanic crater which had a small gap that had eroded away to get in, this was really cool.
After breakfast we got a dinghy from the boat to the edge of a cliff, we climbed up the side where a path had been made and walked along here for about 2km. We saw lots of birds including gulls, red footed boobies and an owl. I felt a bit like I was in the film 'Birds' as there were so many birds flying around us!
After this we got back on the boat where we were given a quick snack of fruit, there was lots of different ones including passion fruit, grapefruit and bananas. We quickly changed into our snorkelling gear and got back in the dingy for snorkelling from the side of the dingy. This was really cool and here we saw lots of different tropical fish, there were also some sea lions a bit further along but they didn't come close to us.
We came back for lunch, which was soup, chicken stew, potatoes, asparagus and coleslaw and for dessert a guava fruity thing which looked a bit like baby food. They definitely don't let us starve!
Browny and I went and sunbathed on the deck for a bit and I asked Norman if I could use his laptop to look at some of my videos. He told me about his life and how he is a tour guide for 2 weeks a month and then works on his coffee farm in Santa Cruz for the rest of the time. He enjoyed showing me LOTS of photos, this did get a bit tedious by the time I had seen about 50 pictures of coffee plants, but I tried to remain enthusiastic!
In the afternoon we had a wet landing onto the beach. We were going on another trek and Browny had forgotten her walking shoes, but luckily it wasn't as difficult as it had been and she was ok in her flip flops! We saw lots of sea lions and more red footed boobies as well as some other birds including some yellow canaries and fluffy baby ones! Browny also spotted all the little hermit crabs which ran into their holes as we walked along the beach. After the walk we went back to beach where some people snorkelled but we didn't want to again as it was a bit cold! We sat on the beach and watched the sea lions climbing all over each other, the adult ones then went into the sea to look for food leaving the baby sea lion on his own, he was making some crying noises and at one point came right up close to us! He was really cute!
We then got back into the dingy to go back to the boat, on the way the engine cut out but lukily Edi managed to get it working again! Back on boat we had another snack, some cheese puff things which we dipped in honey. After this we had our first shower, it was very small and took ages to get hot water but once the water heated up it was probably the best shower I've had so far! With 12 people all trying to shower at the same time though the hot water soon ran out and Browny was subjected to a cold one...my turn to go second tomorrow :(
For dinner (more food!) we had Wahoo fish, rice and salad. Dessert was a milky cake with a fruity sauce - this was really odd and after I didn't feel too good! We then had the daily briefing for the following day where the guide was supposed to tell us what was going on but he seemed to be completely clueless as to what was happening and answered everyone's questions with 'you'll see!'. Everyone started making very obvious joke about how he had no idea what we were doing which was a bit awkward!
Kat, Nathan, Browny and I played cards before bed - I was useless! We had started moving again and it felt like we were on a roller coaster, this made us all feel quite ill! Browny and I were both squeezed into our tiny bathroom feeling sick. I laid down on the floor and this seemed to help a bit and eventually I fell asleep, but Browny didn't manage to keep her food down! With 8 hours of sailing ahead another bad nights sleep seemed on the cards!
