Today was a jam packed day! We began by picking up our transport to take us rafting, we went on a Chiva bus out through Baños to get to the river we would be rafting on. The views were incredible and there were waterfalls everywhere! We arrived and changed into the wetsuits - Browny's was massive on her, you probably could have got two of her in it. We then had a demonstration of what we had to do. We were taught commands for forwards paddling, backwards paddling and getting inside the raft. We were also taught what to do if you went over board, using the hook on your paddle to reach for the raft, as well as what I thought was worst case scenario, if the raft flipped.
We were quickly into the water and soon realised our guide was crazy! He guided us through all the biggest rapids and being at the front I got absolutely drenched every time! It was great fun though and at a calmer point in the river he said we could go for a swim - Browny and I thought he was joking but before he had even finished one girl was in the water! We both jumped in and the water was freezing! It was good fun though :)
A bit further down our crazy guide led us into a rapid that was just too big for us and completely flipped our raft and chucked us all out! I was fine and was frantically looking for Browny, who popped up from under the boat a few seconds later looking very distressed. Turned out that really 'useful' hook on the end of someone's paddle had got caught in her helmet and she had been held under water until she managed to free herself! Slightly traumatised we all were back in the raft and a couple of minutes later had forgotten all about it, except for one guy who proceeded to sit on the floor of the raft for the rest of the rapids and made wimpish noises every time he saw a rapid coming up!
All back on dry land alive we headed back in the party bus for lunch and back to Baños before canyoning. This time we were given much better fitting and quality wet suits! It was just Browny and I with our guide which was good and once fitted with our harnesses and helmets headed for the waterfalls. Looking down them we were both quite nervous as these were no trickles of waterfalls, they looked pretty wild and we were not made any calmer by our guide making a joke about forgetting how to tie the knot in the rope that was going to be holding us up! I went first and despite having to try and pose for pictures whilst getting a face full of cold water, had fun and was more relaxed and excited for my next go. Browny however found it difficult to keep her feet close to the wall with the force of the water and at the bottom swung face first into the wall and whacked her arm, hurting her elbow. She was ok but a bit shaken up and in pain decided that the rafting had been enough adventure for one day and didn't want to continue with the canyoning. I carried on and did a few more waterfalls including one where I walked down facing forward, one I slid down like a slide (browny did this one too!) and another one where there was a 45m vertical drop which was basically like an upright bungy - without the bounce at the bottom! Cold and wet by the end we were both glad for the cup of tea that awaited us.
Back to Baños centre and straight off to the hot baths, these were no more than 2 minutes from our hostel which was handy! They are fed by thermal springs from the base of the active Volcán Tungurahua. We had to wear a shower cap like thing to stop our hair getting into the water so everyone was looking really cool. There were three big pools; a cold one, one which was like a hot bath and the other which was 42 degrees! Naively we began with the hot one and weren't able to put our feet in for more than 5 seconds without feeling like they were burning off! So we went to the much nicer warm pool and stayed in their for a while before attempting the hot pool again, it was much better the second time and we quickly went fully in and were fine (as long as we didn't move!). Next to this pool was a freezing cold pool and we alternated between the two which was surprisingly refreshing until your body temperature had cooled and you were absolutely freezing!
After the baths we went for dinner at 'Mumma Hood' which was a restaurant which had lots of different food from around the world and we treated ourselves to some chicken Pad Thai and a massive smoothie!
When we went back to the hostel, the lady who did massages was still there and we decided to get a back massage this was really good and finished off a great day!
