Day 15 - Kings Canyon to Erldunda (272kms / 3hrs)
We were up very early and out the door at 6:30am so we could complete the Kings Canyon Rim Walk before check out. It was very dark when we arrived but as we started the steep climb up about 500 stone steps to the top of the canyon the sun started to rise. There were lots of people but we were ahead of them. We then followed the canyon rim around admiring the sandstone domes and the spectacular views. When we got to the lookout it was sunrise. About halfway along the walk you go down lots of stairs and across boardwalks to the Garden of Eden. It’s a delightful area of cool waterhole and riverine vegetation. There wasn’t much water and a 79 year old man was sitting there telling us how sad it was to see such little amount of water. He visits regularly and it’s the lowest he has ever seen. We then continued the descend back down to the carpark.
The walk is 7.2km and took us just under 2.5 hours.
On the way back to the caravan we filled up the car with the most expensive petrol on the trip so far at 210.9
We had breakfast, packed up and left the resort at 10am. Another uneventful drive apart from seeing another flock of red tallied black cockatoos sitting in a tree around Ebeneezer.
We arrived at Erldunda Roadhouse just after 1pm. We set-up and had lunch then we all had some downtime. The kids went to the play equipment and then played Rummy-O with Grandma. We then walked to look at the birds and the emu farm. We had fun feeding the emu’s pellets. It’s a bit scary as you think they are going to peck you. They did a couple of times and we got covered in emu slobber but it was still fun. The kids couldn’t wait any longer and had to buy an ice cream so both got a bubble-o-bill. They then continued playing at the playground with lots of kids.
Had a bbq for dinner, watched the sunset and the kids had fun feeding the camels and kangaroos again.
