In Christchurch, New Zealand! It feels like a home away from home. English speaking, driving on the left hand side of the road, winter/autumn morning frost and it's green!
I'm staying in a prison for the next two nights. It's an old prison converted into a hostel. It's cool! So clean compared to the one I stayed in Santiago last month so staying in hostels isn't so bad now! I now know how I did it in Europe!
I can't believe I'm now more than halfway through my trip, already! :(
I slept so well on the plane! It was more than half empty which meant almost everyone had a row to themselves! I didn't need first class for that! :p It made up for the lack of sleep the night before for sure!
Got rudely woken up (not really) at 2am New Zealand time, for breakfast. Ham and cheese sandwich too, now that's a weird breakfast at a crazy hour! Managed to get back to sleep for a hour or so before landing.
Landed at Auckland on time. I went through immigration so so quickly. So I thought, perfect, I should be able to get my flight to Christchurch ok as I only had less than 2 hours when landing. But nope... I waited for over half an hour for my bag, but there was nothing. So I went to baggage services to see what was happening. They had no idea and knew nothing. So spent ages giving info etc. I started getting stressed out as I didn't want to miss my flight to Christchurch and I needed my bag too! But then after an hour of waiting for my bag/giving info, a man who worked with baggage came in with my bag! Phew! Went through customs fairly quickly. Once that was all done I only had 40 minutes until my plane to Christchurch left. The domestic terminal was 15 minutes away! So I put my bag on a trolley and walked/ran. At one point I thought it would be a good idea to lean on the trolley and glide along like I do at the supermarket sometimes. Nope. Bad idea. The trolley toppled over and I almost did too but just managed to regain my balance, phew! Wasted valuable seconds then! Decided to just stick with running/walking fast - a lot safer! Got to the check in half an hour before the flight was due to leave all hot and sweaty after all the hassle! Checked in okay but then there was a long queue through security. Just managed to get to the gate as soon as it was boarding, phew! Window seat, yay! Nobody next to me either, which is a great thing as I probably stink so bad after travelling for over 2 days without a shower!
Landed okay and got my bag without a problem this time!
Got a transfer to the hostel. Arrived at 8.30am which was really early but I was allowed to check in, yay! Needed a shower badly! Sharing with 9 other people. H d a well needed nice long hot shower, oh bliss! Felt so much better afterwards.
Checked out Christchurch. It was a long walk to the city centre, over half an hour but it was good exercise! Beautiful and sunny, cold but the sun makes it so much warmer. It's so quiet here, buildings are still being restored after a huge earthquake in 2011. There's one area where shops and cafés are in containers which look cool. See photo.
I went to a cafe for lunch and ordered a steak sandwich as it was the only thing I liked on the menu! Decided to sit outside in the sun because it was so nice and warm. I expected it to be an ordinary sandwich with a thin slice of steak and salad like it usually is in other places. Nope. Two slices of toasted crusty bread with an actual fillet steak cut up into pieces (probably half a steak) with mushrooms and salad. Oh it was so nice though! That was my main meal for sure! Left one piece of bread as I was full. Birds then came to my table, I was confused as to why. Then they grabbed the bread and flew off to eat it! It was so funny to watch!
Went to a museum about the history of earthquakes in Christchurch. It was interesting, I didn't realise just how many earthquakes Christchurch has had!
Saw the cardboard cathedral which is replacing the original one I think as it looks like they won't be restructuring it.
Went to buy a parcel to send things home as I bought things and my bags are so full so I need to free up some space. But it turns out that the parcel is too small to fit everything in! So I'll have to buy a bigger one tomorrow! What a waste of money, oh well!
Bed early! Cannot wait to sleep in a proper bed for once tonight! :D
