I walked to Gilligans to meet Stu as he was getting the same flight as me to Darwin as he decided to go and visit some family that he has there. The flight was at 12:45pm so I said goobye to his roommates and then we got the airport shuttle bus. The flight arrived at 3pm (new time) and we saw an Irish couple that we'd been on the shuttle bus with who asked if we wanted to share a taxi so we jumped in with them and got to Mitchell Street, which is the main street in Darwin and has loads of hostels, bars and restaurants on it. I was staying at Maelaluca's so Stu and I got dropped off there and after checking in we left our bags in my room and went to explore.
The humidity in Darwin is intense! I felt like I was sweating as soon as I started walking so we headed to the Esplanade to try and cool off. It was really nice down there with some warehouses that had been converted into trendy bars and restaurants and really funky apartments. As you can't swim in the sea because of the jelly fish they have a pool which has a wave machine where people sit in rubber rings and go over the very large waves. Then they had some water which is sea water but is safe to swim in as it has been blocked off so I paddled in there but unfortunately the water was warm so it didn't cool me off. After sitting down for a bit and feeling very lethargic due to the heat we headed to the beach. The beach does not compare to the beaches I'd seen along the East Coast though as it seemed quite dirty so we didn't stick around for long and instead decided to go back to the hostel and sit in the air conditioned room. Stu got collected at 7pm by his cousin so I said goodbye and then went and grabbed some food for diiner and went on the internet and phoned Mum to catch up. I then got my stuff ready for my tour the next day.
