Our reconnaissance mission was successful. We found an Oasis, literally.
About 9-15 minutes up the mountain (depending on how energised you are feeling) is Oasis House, sitting high above town, on its own. We stopped at a few places, including this one, and couldn't be happier. For $12/night we have our own room and bathroom with views looking up into the mountains. It's beautiful and quiet, exactly what we wanted.
Oasis House is also the location of Sarvaguna Yoga Dhaama center. Two women from San Diego, California are here to run a teacher training course, which doesn't begin for a few more weeks. Until then, they are running drop -in classes twice a day, a Vinyasa flow from 8:30-10 and Yin from 5-6. There is also a meditation course starting tomorrow. Their 6:30-8:30am pranayama (breathing) and meditation class is open to drop-in. Guess I know where I'll be every morning for the next two weeks!
After moving, unpacking, and exploring, I went to my first yoga class.
There is a yoga studio in every other building in town and all have drop-in classes around the same times--either 8:30-10am or 4-5:30pm. And there is really no way to know which are good. So I should try them all I suppose.
I stumbled into a Hatha yoga class and there were only two of us (me and a 50 year old man from Tel Aviv). The instructor, whose name I can't recall, was amazing. The class didn't flow like most classes I take in the states or Oz. It started with doing a series of exercises 50 times each, such as rolling in a ball, bouncing our knees, and waving our arms. We then went into more traditional postures like triangle, cobra, warrior, etc.. There was no obvious organisation to it but I'm sure there was a method to his madness. It was hard. We had to hold each pose a long time too, making it more difficult!
What made it amazing was the sheer simplicity of it and, he knew EXACTLY how to adjust me and put me in the right position when I was (often) not quite there. And it cost about $3!
Tomorrow I will get up for the morning meditation and try out the ole white lady's yoga. Depending on how I'm feeling I'll join Damo on a long walk. If I'm still a bit crook, I'll just read and stretch. Whatever super bug my street food degustation gave me, has not been kind. See how we go.
Till then.
