Spain
After leaving our beloved France we headed along the coast of Spain to San Sebastion. Once again the traffic in these places is horrendous and trying to find a park even more so. After a lunch there we headed off to Bilbao. As I mentioned in the last blog the Spanish are not in the same league as France when it comes to camping. For example we probably saw 20 campgrounds coming into Biarritz but there was only one listed for Bibao and that was 14kms out of town. When we got there it was full ( expletives deleted because this is a family show). Had to spend the night in a supermarket carpark. Very average..
Next morning we headed off to Burgos. It was here I discovered that one of our gas bottles was empty and the other one getting very low. Not a problem we thought we will just go and fill them up. NOT SO. The lovely people of Spain have got there own unique system for gas bottles which we found out after 4 or 5 stops at different places around Burgos.
So we rescheduled our trip and headed for Madrid some 4 hours away. Surely in this huge town we would find some way of filling two gas bottles which every campervan is equipped with. After THE most frustrating day off the whole trip which just so happened to be SUE"S BIRTHDAY to boot we had to make the decision to return to France. Trust me when I tell you we were not very happy campers..
So far in Spain we found it was by far the most frustrating country we have visited and the decision to head back to France was reinforced by the dreadful air quality which was playing havoc with Sue's asthma. I doubt the visibility would be 8 kms and with 36-40degree heat it became all a bit much. This thick smog, fog was so thick you could not see the mountains until you were literally in them. So it means we might miss Portugal but we will see how it goes down the other side of Spain. Maybe they can redeem themselves there
