After seeing many dangerously low power lines along the way yesterday we'd only gone a couple of minutes out of town when we came across some that were lying coiled on some guys front lawn. He was standing there holding onto one so I'm thinking the power was cut there lol
We headed to the memorial for flight 93, our reason for stopping in Somerset last night. Compared to the NY & DC memorials it feels underwhelming, as if far less thought went to it than the other two. Fourteen years on its still unfinished despite its simplicity. There's a visitor and info centre which is incomplete, they say it'll be open on the tenth in time for the anniversary on the 11th but there's a lot to be done by the look of it. I know it's in the middle of nowhere but feel these victims were amongst the bravest of all those that died that day and they deserve better.
Down the Lincoln Hwy past fields of corn we slowly made our way towards Harrisburg. We stopped at lights in a small town beside a classicly styled Denny's. We couldn't help ourselves, we had to see what it was like inside & it didn't disappoint. It was styled classic old school diner booths etc as usual the food was awesome too :-)
Turning North we started seeing more sizeable towns and a lot of dairies. We must've been on the edge of Dutch Pennsylvania cos here and there there was signs the Amish were about and more yards than usual had windmill decorations. We also started passing a gas station/ diner combo franchise called Sheetz, pretty sure not too many Aussies would want to eat somewhere that advertised itself with that name lol a little way on in Carlisle near the colleges is the Backdoor Cafe, again not sure that sounds too appetising either!
In Harrisburg we went to the National Civil War Museum. It was very well laid out in chronological order starting a few years before the war, laying out the background for what was to follow. Newsflash! It wasn't by any means all about slavery, it was a lot to do with politics and economics. Having gained most of our "knowledge" of the war from movies and TV shows the museum was a great unbiased telling of the tale, even when it was less than flattering to the main players.
From there we drove to Gettysburg, our stop for the night. It's been another gorgeous warm day, low 30's and plenty of sunshine.
