Broome, into the outback....
Left Broome, the long, never ending roads began! Terrain changed from flat plains, with roaming cattle, roos and emus, to rocky valleys, miles of burnt land from bush fires. The occasional road house gave a brief relief from driving, good wee stop and a coffee. The fuel pumps are labelled different from road house to road house, at one i had to sniff the pump to ensure its was petrol not diesel...the old boy with his 3 legged dog enjoyed coming out to 'have a word with me', once he knew i wasn't trying to geta high all was good, dog was lush!
As were trying not to hit anything on the roads, we pushed to make camp before night fall....the one night we didnt make it, we hit a roo!! Roo survived, and luckily hit us where there was already damage. This was followed 5 mins later by stopping at a free camp site by 'Marys Pool'...the nightmare began. Mosquitos like youve never seen, frogs, bats, and a drunk Aboriginie sat beside his car enjoy his bottles. Due to insects, 'we had to keep the windows shut!' This turned the van into an oven...cue 4 adults sat in under wear, sweating like sat in a sauna, not sleeping. This was the worst night weve had by far, funny now, but defo a challenge at the time!
Early rise (no kip!), and we headed for Kununarra, keen to spot fresh and salty crocs! We tried our luck fishing in lake Kununarra, caught nowt but met a 2 meter freshwater croc. Kipped in a caravan park, better night as we bought a small tent to keep the heat down in the van. Had a nice meal at the pump house, sat above the lake.
Headed out early doors to try a fishing spot on the Ord river (hopefully spot a salty), whilst Ry and I were stalking the 'Barra', the girls had a visit from a group of 'indiginous' people, already hammered (10:30), one with a knife in one hand, block of cheese in the other. The same women was asking Mich for something, anything 'wot u got for me?!', were her words. Oblivious, we walked back to van to help the girls out, chat with the men about fishing, and shut the van up to move on! Still haunting Mich!
Next leg was to Katherine, a good site, with a pool meant we were rested for the drive to Kakadu NP.
