(DAY 18)
Kia Ora!
We had such a lazy day yesterday and yet we still managed to stay in our lounging clothes until midday. For breakfast we ate the leftovers from Lauren's amazing lasagne before we swiftly got ready to pick up Sam Lappin, another of Kie's friends from back home who is over here for a year, from the airport.
We had been somewhat disappointed by the lack of aftershocks since our arrival, having been told we'd feel them during the day. In actual fact, there had been aftershocks during the night which we'd slept through but we wanted to experience at least one during our stay, just to know what it felt like. Today was the day we actually got to feel an aftershock, although it was really quite small.
We all headed out to meet Lappin at the airport and sure enough, as we pulled up, he was there waiting for us when we arrived. We were given a brief tour of the area by car and were shown some of the real devastation from the earthquake, which totally blew us away. Still unable to get into the city centre meant we've been somewhat limited in where we can go. We had planned to explore Christchurch thoroughly upon our return but of course with the earthquake we've not been able to, and won't be able to, see any of Christchurch.
We all returned back to Louis and Laurens, chilling in the living room and catching up on our Kiwi experiences. Unfortunately for Eddie, the puppy, he had been feeling under the weather and so Lauren took him to the vets - deciding she'd rather take Eddie to the vet than sit with the boys who were talking all things rugby and waiting for the rugby to come on the TV, Sophie went with Lauren for a couple of hours. We stopped off at McDonalds and pigged out when we returned to the house, treating the boys to a Big Mac each too.
After a few hours of sitting around chatting we experienced our first major aftershock which was really quite scary; at around 7pm everything started to shake, including the sofa's we were sat on and photo frames fell off of the shelf. We could only imagine what a big earthquake would feel like - terrifying. The boys had already started on the beers and Lauren and Sophie swiftly joined in. We continued to have many little aftershocks for the rest of the evening, which was so strange after not feeling one at all until today. It's also eerie that we all stop whatever we're doing and sit silent, listening until the aftershock passes. We had sausage and chips for dinner and spent the rest of the evening sleepily chatting until the early hours before we finally went for our beds where we had an aftershock-less nights sleep.
