Soongies' Great Adventure
Our last full day in Dubai was a fun one! We embraced the ostentatiousness and opulence of this city - part of what has now become the culture of Dubai. Our first stop was Atlantis Aquaventure Waterpark - the best waterpark in Dubai. This park is located in the Atlantis Resort on the famous Palm Jumeirah (on the very topmost frond). We bought cheaper tickets from the tourist service from our hotel lobby - we thought we almost scored a free ticket as you can register your birthday for a free pass on the Aquaventure website valid for the week of your birthday! Calvin's birthday is on the 19th December and we thought 16th is within a week but unfortunately it's only valid from the 19th to 25th. To get to Aquaventure we took a metro, a tram and a monorail right to the front entrance of the waterpark. Atlantis is a huge resort designed like the lost underwater city. There were hardly any lines for the rides so we got to go on most of them during our 4 and half hours there. Calvin went on Poseidon's Revenge (a slide where you drop from a chute) and Kate's favourite ride was the Aquaconda (even more fun when you have 6 people in the tube!). The most unique one was Shark Attack which was a slide that went through an aquarium of sharks, rays and fish! Our next stop was Burj Khalifa - tallest building in the world. After a quick dinner of Thai food at the Dubai Mall, we had tickets for At The Top which brings you to the 124th and 125th floor observation deck. There was quite a long queue of people through security and then for the elevators. The elevator ride takes 1 minute to go from ground to Level 124 and travels at a speed of 9 m per second! Once at the top, we got to walk around to see the lights of Dubai in 360 degrees. The outside observation deck is open roofed and it's quite vertiginous looking down through the windows! We saw the Dubai Fountain show from above - it was great to see the moving lights and water from a bird's eye-view. Coming down, we went out to the Dubai Fountain for the 8:30 pm show. This was spectacular - a moving and astounding display to Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman's 'Time to Say Goodbye' - huge jets of water, dancing to the words and music in precise choreography. Better than fireworks! It was so crowded around the fountain - it felt like New Year's Eve! Trying to get into the Dubai Mall afterwards was like people exiting a stadium after a grand final! To finish off our night, we had an ice cream each from iCream on the Metro Link walk from the mall to the train. They make their ice cream fresh using liquid nitrogen - Kate had a mix of mango and caramel flavours and topped it off with fresh mango and a brownie while Calvin had white chocolate and raspberry ice cream with fresh mango and raspberries on top.
