Soongies' Great Adventure
Today was a bit of a late start as we had to do some clothes washing in the bathtub. Using a bath seems so easy compared to using buckets in Kenya! We have never been so appreciative of a bath in our lives! We then wandered over to a travel agent not too far from the hotel to try and sort out the baggage situation for our next flight to Prague – we booked through Czech Airlines which would usually have 23 kg but they've put us on a partner budget airline Smartwings which only has 15 kg. They were no help at all! We strolled over to Deira (old part of Dubai) which was really interesting to see. We wandered around the streets full of Arabic shops and went through some of the souks where the shop owners tried to convince us to buy their try on their pashminas ("Real cashmere") and try their spices ("Look only. Free to look!") – of course they were unsuccessful as we have no room in our luggage for anything else. It was then a quick 40c Water Taxi to the other side of Dubai Creek (more like a river though) to see more of Old Town - Bur Dubai. We had another kebab (these are the cheapest option in Dubai) for lunch and then wandered around the Dubai Museum, which was very insightful. It's bigger than it looks which lots of information and exhibits on the history of Dubai, the bedouins, landscape and wildlife in the region as well as some displays on local archaeology. It's only $1.25 entry! It was then back on the metro but this time to the Dubai Marina, where we wandered around ignoring the really overpriced restaurants and instead went for the apples that we had been carrying around in the backpack! So healthy! We even went to the Skydive Dubai Outdoor Gym for a look (and a few pull-ups by Calvin). We decided that a food court would be the best option for dinner so we caught the metro and stopped at Mall of the Emirates (another huge mall). This time it was Japanese from the food court for dinner followed by a $3 donut from Starbucks (a bargain!). We also stopped for a bit to watch Ski Dubai in action (the ski slope in the mall). It looked a lot more like Christmas with the huge Christmas tree and lights and snow! Then back on the metro to our hotel to rest our weary legs.
