Soongies' Great Adventure
We woke up to heaps of snow outside - the roads, paths and mountains were covered in white!
Today we were headed to Borgarnes via the Western Peninsula.
First stop was Kirkjufell waterfall. Only problem was it was howling with wind, hail and snow when we arrived so we decided against getting out of the car and instead appreciated the view from inside the warmth of the car.
Of course the weather fined up pretty quickly after that stop. It was beautiful driving along the coast and we were hoping to spot some whales!
Our next stop was Baejerfoss waterfall in the fishing village of Olafsvik. This was a beautiful fall, still partially frozen at the top, which served as a background for the town and it was a nice easy walk up to it. Calvin was wearing his waterproof shoes and crossed the river at the base - luckily he didn't fall in to the freezing water!
At the next town over, we saw the Ingjaldsholl church standing on a hill alone with a beautiful view of the sea and the snowy mountains. The church is one of the oldest concrete churches of the country.
Entering the Snæfellsjökull National Park, we stopped at a pull over point so that Calvin could get a better look at the ocean (Kate stayed in the car as it was still pretty windy and cold). Calvin came back 5 minutes later absolutely drenched from a blow hole extravaganza that was a bit unexpected. After getting changed on the side of the road into his dry pants, we were ready to continue the journey.
We then came across a crater! The Saxhóll Crater had a nice staircase leading to the top. We walked up to the top and got to see inside the crater and got a great view of the surrounding scenery.
We then stopped at the beautiful Londrangar Basalt Cliffs in the ocean - it was a nice view but pretty windy and cold so we were glad to get back in the car!
We were a little bit hungry by this time and checked out a cafe in a village called Hellnar, thinking the west side of Iceland might be cheaper! Wrong! A bowl of soup was $18 - not a very affordable bowl of soup! There was a nice natural basalt arch on the shore though and a cute church.
There was another brief stop at a canyon however it would have been a long walk to get to the start and we were keen to get to our accommodation.
Before long we arrived in the cute town of Borgarnes and checked into our accommodation. Kate did some research and found that the best bakery in Iceland is in Borgarnes! So we drove there and had vegetable soup with herb buttered bread for a late lunch followed by a piece of caramel cake - all reasonably priced!
It was a quick trip to the supermarket and petrol station before heading back to the house for some R & R. For dinner we had our pasta leftovers from last night and then Calvin went for a short stroll along the water's edge coming across a wooden playground, athletics track and an amazing sunset.
