Soongies' Great Adventure
We started off the day with a quick walk to the bakery. We shared a deliciously sweet caramel cinnamon bun. Then it was a half hour drive to the meeting place for our 2 hour Icelandic horse ride tour!! There were another 2 people - Laurie and Kelly, friendly Americans from Washington DC, on our tour plus the guide. Before starting, we learnt how to get on and off the horse, how to change directions and how to stop. Kate's horse was called Stoopy and Calvin's was called Banksy - both were a dark brown colour, like chocolate! The horse ride went through fields with lovely views of lakes and mountains. At one point the horses even had to go through cold rivers and snow! Kate's horse kept stopping to drink at the streams and he always wanted to be at the front! At one stage the guide picked up the pace with the horses but thankfully that pace didn't continue as it was a very bumpy ride! We stopped twice to take photos of the scenery and of our horses. The horses were beautiful and they had funny characters. Banksy enjoyed selfies. At the end of the tour we got complimentary hot chocolate and cake. Then we drove back through Akureyri and then onto our destination of Blönduós. The Gladheimer Cottages in Blönduós were really cute! And for the first time in Iceland we even got our own bathroom!! More exciting though was that our cabin had a hot tub (which you fill with geothermal water) and a sauna! We ate some leftover rice porridge for lunch and then started filling up the hot tub - a very long process! Initially when we got in the hot tub, it was way too hot so Calvin manually put some buckets of cold water in to prevent us getting burnt! We then relaxed in style in our private delightfully warm geothermal hot tub while the outside temperature was 3 degrees. We then prepared dinner while talking to our friend Vicki on the phone and then after our pasta and veggies meal we watched the movie Bran Nue Dae.
