Today we planned to go to the Beach, but during breakfast (at a new place - Sunday most are closed!) decided to take a bus to Kek Lok Si Temple. It is around 8km out of town near Pekan Air Itam. We walked the 400m to Lebuh Chulia and as luck would have it a bus came within minutes. We paid 2 Ringgit each (40p) and sat in the air conditioned luxury (of a public bus). It took around 35 mins and the bus driver generously informed us of our stop. It was steaming hot and fairly busy. We could see the giant Structure surrounding a Buddha - maybe 100-120 feet high - and a set of temples adjacent. We walked up some steps to an entrance (of sorts) and folowed a trail of covered shops. Almost all selling T-shirts or Temple Trinkets. After an eternity of weaving through the 'corridors' we entered the Temple complex. It was a mixture of the extraordinary on one hand and the tacky on the other. Some statues, temples and Buddhas were beautifully crafted in wood or stone - yet other were in gaudy coloured concrete! (see the photos!) We walked and took photos - eventually using a small funicular style 'lift' to reach the huge bronze 'Buddha' at the top. It's scale is hard to show - but it was a beauty. We managed to get a panoramic view of Georgetown too in the mid-day sun. We retreated to a small Chinese restuarant for a snack lunch and drinks (with the pleasure of air con!) on the descent. We took a car to the Penang Hill Funicular, however, it being Sunday the queues were very long - so we will try that later during the week! As Sheryl promised in an earlier blog there are some photos of her giant trousers. Hope you are enjoying the blogs and pics - PLEASE take a moment to message us with your thoughts - Thanks speak soon.....
