Saz and Dave's travels
We woke up early today and had breakfast at 8am as we had arranged to go on the boat trip around Phi Phi Leh today. So off we went at 8:30am to meet the driver just outside the hotel. As agreed yesterday, the cost of the trip for me and Sarah in our own long tail boat with the driver for 3 hours was going to set us back 800 Baht, not bad at all.
It took about 30 minutes in the boat from the pier to get to Maya beach, our first stop on Phi Phi Leh and also where the film "The Beach" was filmed. When we got there, there were only 5 other people on the beach and the view was exquisite. We took plenty of pictures of the bay but do not as yet have them on CD so we can't get them on the site yet, but we will soon enough.
We first went for a swim here before all the tourists arrived, and the water was amazing, so clear!!! About 20 minutes later though, the peace was shattered when a steady stream of speed boats started to arrive bringing with them groups and groups of Japanese tourists, complete with matching outfits, gloves on hands and cameras on tripods, which they then used to take copious pictures of themselves in front of the speed boat. It was all rather perculiar.
The next stop on the trip was a small secluded beach where most people it appeared stopped to do a bit of snorkelling, however as we didnt fancy snorkelling we took the time just to chill on the beach, which unfortunately was fairly polluted with rubbish, while our driver had a quick kip on the boat.
After a further 15 minutes exploring the beach we then meandered around the maze of snorkelers into an awesome lagoon. Here we just had time to ourselves for a bit of a swim and some amazing photo opportunities. So we jumped off the boat into really deep water, which was lovely and cool - quite unusual compared to what we have seen of Thailand in the past couple of weeks (as most of the beaches have really hot and shallow water). We stayed here admiring the view until we were completely knackered from swimming and ready to head back to the hotel. On the way back, we passed the Viking cave which is famous for the birds nests made from the saliva from the birds that live there as these nests are sold as a delicacy for large amounts of money in places such as Singapore, Korea and Japan. The scaffolding that the people use to get the nests from the sides of the cave are made from bamboo and look increadibly dangerous, you will be able to see pictures soon.
After such an active morning, we decided we would spend the afternoon relaxing on our beach again. We really should do some exercise soon - AHH well nevermind we will have plenty of time at home. On the way to the beach we were stopped by some locals who appeared to be having a day off, chilling on the rocks. As we went past we thought that they wanted us to take their picture however it turned out that they wanted US to pose in their picture, very strange.
When we returned from the beach we had a quick shower and decided to eat at the shack again as we couldn't resist the appeal of the green curry we had yesterday. Just to be different we had shrimp and fried rice with the curry, and they were both lovely.
As we were going to bed, the lightning that we saw last night arrived again but there was still no storm. Hopefully there will be one tomorrow as im well up for one of these tropical storms!!!
