Saz and Dave's travels
YO YO YO Im gonna be writing all about Phi Phi for the next 7 days so WORD UP YO!!!!
This morning we had to wake up early as today was the day we were going to leave Patong and go to the Phi Phi islands. The transfer had all been arranged when we booked the tour and was scheduled to pick us up from the hotel between 7:00 and 7:15 am. However the first thing i was aware of this morning was a shreiking Sarah shouting that it was 7:20 after having slept through the alarm. As quick as i have moved this holiday i threw on the nearest set of clothes and BOOTED it to the reception to tell them about our predicament. Luckily the receptionist (after me taking another 5 minutes trying to explain why i was in a bit of a panic) rang the travel company and they returned to our hotel to pick us up with our hurriedly packed rucksacks, which was nice.
The transfer to Phi Phi was fairly sound with a nice air conditioned mini bus to take us to Phuket port and then a fast boat all the way to the Phi Phi pier.
We arrived on Koh Phi Phi Don at about 9:30am ish (after leaving Phuket at about 7:25) and checked into the Phi Phi Hotel, which was extremely nice and far too out of our league as backpackers. We were greeted with Pineapple juice, the rooms had air-con, coffee making facilities and cable TV as well as being very clean.
After checking into our lovely hotel room we decided that we best have some breakfast as we were both fairly ravenous as we didnt get a chance to get the old hot dogs from the 7-11 this morning. We read in the guidebook that the Phi Phi bakery was well worth a visit and as it was about 2 minutes away from the hotel we decided to give it a go. The food was lovely and there were loads of delicious looking fresh cakes which we promised ourselves we would sample next time.
Our first impression of Phi Phi was that it is absolutely stunning, as after breakfast we walked to a picture perfect white sand beach complete with clear turquoise water which you can see in the photo albums. The little streets are really laid back with a hippyish feel to the place, a bit like Totnes in Devon but much smaller and hotter! Even though there is still some damage from the Tsunami this doesnt detract from the beauty of this place and it seems that most of the repairs are well underway. One moving part of the day was when we went to the Tsunami memorial garden which was full of tributes to all those that lost their lives in this event. It was a really nice idea to have somewhere special to remember the victims.
After a good look round we decided to go back to the hotel and cool off a little in the hotel pool as the temperature was nearing the 40s or so it seemed.
Later we made use of the free coffee facilities in the room and had a quick power nap before heading out to get some tea. Tonight we decided to splash out a little and get ourselves some fresh seafood. We had barbecued red snapper with plum sauce which Sarah expertly filleted as well as a "mild" Penang curry, which turned out to be as hot as a vindaloo!
Looking forward to am ace week chilling here with all the good food, beaches and views on tap!
