An early start this morning to catch the train to Nanjing. It was a shortish journey (2 hours) and I arrived at mid day and got the tube out to the hostel. Got off at the tube station and walked for about half an hour before I decided I was going in the wrong direction so turned back and started again. This time I gave up after 15 minutes and asked someone. I was on the right road now but had been walking in the wrong direction! Finally found the hostel and checked in - I had booked a bed in an 8 bed dorm, but because they were not very busy they put me into a triple room. Walked the 2 miles out to the Nanjing Massacre Memorial which was really interesting although a little shocking in places. I ended up spending almost 3 hours here - there was so much to see and read about. Went back towards the hostel which is in the Confuscious Temple area. The area is full of shops and markets and has lots of places to buy street food. I saw many varieties of insects on sticks being boiled but I played it safe and had tofu! The area was really vibrant but really relaxed at the same time. Had a drink in the bar at the hostel and then had a chat with my room mate - a lady in her 50's who has just arrived from New Zealand to teach English.
