So it was time to leave the gorgeous mwanza (or not!) and head through more of Tanzania towards the Serengeti. The journey was long and we had bad rain which caused the roads to flood which meant we got delayed in our arrival at the campsite. One car tried to continue through the river on the road and pretty much sank which meant they had to be towed! Fortunately our truck is huge and once the car was out we was back on our way!
We arrived late at the campsite (well actually our truck got stuck in thick mud so we had to 4x4 it with all our tents and backpacks actually into the campsite) I lost my flip flops in the mud and also ended up looking like a pig in s**t!! (sorry dad)! To make it a little better we had to remove any food from our tents-just to stop the hyenas coming in and eating us :-) luckily we had overnight guards to protect us from wild animals! We were just on the outskirts of the Serengeti so there's lions/zebra/elephants and so on! Jealous? Hmm didn't think so!!
Had an awesome nights sleep, got up early for a cold shower (I am yet to find a hot one in Africa!) and made some toast on the camp fire for breakfast :)
We headed off into the Serengeti today, the campsite is just well the Serengeti, no fences, no guards, just us our tents and the big 5! I kid you not! I put my tent up on fresh leopard prints :-/ hoping they don't return!!! Once our tents were up we headed out on our first game drive which was amazing! We saw elephants, hippos (really cool and fat-my favourite!) monkeys, buffalos, jackals and then two leopards (mother and cub) we were so close to them :-) I just hope they don't visit me in the night! Slightly scared about sleeping here...but here goes!
Ok so blogging from my tent: absolutely terrified! 00:38 and the loudest hyenas are just outside :-/ not opening my tent because they might eat me and there's lions and buffalo and hippos and every other animal out there!! I've woke Vicky up (think she was sleep talking) she just said 'don't worry if their out of their tents they will get eaten first?!!!) haha what?! Anyway will try and sleep with one eye open and make it to the morning! Who's idea was it to camp with the big 5?!!! Why??!!
6:00am alarm went off, packed, put tents down and discussed the hyenas and apparently buffalo that were next to our tents in the night over breakfast! I'm pleased to be eating breakfast as apposed to being breakfast to a lion or something else! Today we are heading on an early game drive and then we leave the Serengeti and travel through more of Tanzania towards the Ngorongora Crater where we will set up camp.Nothing like camping on an extinct volcano! Let's just say..It best be extinct!!
