Today the weather was much better so we headed off on the 9.45 ferry with our picnic lunch to Rottnest Island. 'Rotto' is well known for it's beautiful bays and beaches and it didn't dissappoint! It's also known for its wildlife, including the quokka, which is a very little kangaroo. It was mistaken for a large rat when europeans first visited the island (hence its name which means rat's nest in Dutch) but it's not a rat at all and they are much nicer than rats! We saw a little family of them including a mummy with a little joey in her pouch! Cute! We saw plenty of King skinks, big black lizard things that look menacing but only eat flowers so are slightly wussy! We saw whales off the 'West End' (cape Vlamingh) and loads of seals waving their flippers in the air. The island is motor vechile free (exept the shuttle buses) so we got round the island on bikes. The island is 22kms round so that was a bit of a shock to the system after being indolent for so long! Was nice to get the wind in our hair though! We stopped at Longreach Bay for our packed lunch and a swim. The water was so clear and cold but refreshing after our cycle ride! Thanks so much Rach and Chris for such a fab day! Off to see Duffy this evening for one last night in his fab beach side apartment before heading to Perth for our final few days in WA.
