After a lazy morning having breakfast at our hostel and booking accommodation for our next few ports of call we headed off to do one of the jungle treks which begin in and around Tanah Rata. We chose a fairly short and easy one in the hope we wouldn't get sun stroke/lost/eaten by Malaysian sun bears but could also do ourselves without a guide). We chose Robinson Falls which was pretty easy, very short and mostly paved. The falls were pretty good if not a bit brown after the rainfall here over the past few days! After this we decided to go to the MARDI (Malaysia research and development institute) agro technology park which we passed on our way to and from the jungle trek. Although this isn't mentioned in any of the guides we've read, it's clearly a local attraction and it had lots of school kids on their holidays cheekily practising their English with the two strange foreigners wandering around! It is separated into sections and has huge areas of herbs/edible gardens, rose gardens and orchid gardens with a bit of info on the concepts of fertigation (fertilisation and irrigation) and soilless growing technology as well as the strawberry plants and tea plantation we've now come to expect. It was really good and I enjoyed it loads! We then went back to the centre of Tanah Rata for a quick snack including a type of fish style pork scratching type of thing but with sugar involved (Ian thought good, I thought gross!) and some coconut coated peanuts (we both agreed were good!). after this we chilled at the hostel for a while then went back into town for a 'steamboat' tea. This is basically a fondue with spicy stock in one side and non spicy stock in the other, then you're given a selection of raw chicken, fish, prawns, fish balls, eggs, noodles (egg and rice) and veges (like pac choi, cabbage, mushrooms and spinach). You then put all the ingredients in steamboat and leave them there until they're cooked. It was amazing! Bring the steamboat to the UK! Ian reckons, best tea ever!
