London 2008
I've been spending my time this week exploring some museums and cathedrals. I've been to the British Museum a few times, since it's only about a minute from our classroom. There are so many exhibits that you could spend more than a whole day exploring. I had an assignment that involved picking out an object in the museum and writing a summary on it, so that was cool. Yesterday Whitney and I went to the Museum of London, which is a smaller museum. My favorite part was the exhibit on the fire of London. They also had an extremely detailed model of St. Paul's Cathedral that is over 100 years old. After the museum, we walked across the Thames to Southwark Cathedral, which had some beautiful stained glass and arched ceilings. There was also an orchestra and choir rehearsing while we were walking around, so that was really cool.
Today we went to Westminster Cathedral, which was constructed with red and white brick. It looks different than most of the traditional cathedrals here, but it was beautiful inside! There was actually a service going on while we were there, but we were still able to walk around. The smaller chapels in the cathedral were definitely my favorite part, because the ceiling of each chapel featured a beautiful mosaic that told a the story of the saint that the chapel was dedicated to. These mosaics were so detailed that they looked liked paintings from a distance.
This Thursday I will be traveling to Dublin, Ireland for the weekend! I will post pictures and a blog entry when I return!
