Day 1 - It was a big 500km drive from our free camp near Port Headland to Broome on Saturday the 6th of June. It was hot and all the way and by the end we were all getting a little irritable with each other. However by 2:30pm we had checked into the Roebuck Caravan Park (around 30km east of Broome) and by 2:35pm we were all in the pool, the long drive was then a thing of the past. The rest of the day was spent relaxing and getting organised for a good look around Broome the following day.
The next morning we headed into Broome for a look around. Broome is best known for its pearling history past. However these days it is also a tourist town with attractions such as beautiful beaches, restaurants, resorts, caravan parks and wildlife. To us it almost had a Bali or Thailand feel to it. There are tourists from many different countries here getting around on scooters and others being ridden around in pedal carts. The town itself is not what we expected.
Broome was more tropical than we could have imagined the palm trees certainly contribute to this feeling. We spent the morning looking around town before heading to the town beach water fun park for lunch. The kids had a great time running around the water fun park. I took the opportunity to have a dip in the ocean and was really surprised at how turquoise the water was and also at how salty it was. We then out to Gantheume Point to check out that area. Here we watched young people jumping off rocks and cliffs into the ocean below. It was very crazy and something you would see on TV. We then checked out the historic lighthouse here before driving along Gantheaume Beach. This was a great experience and we stopped on the beach and all went for a swim. The thing we loved about Broome was being able to do this. It is such a culture thing here. Families and grey nomads and tourists just drive onto the beach, set up and spend the day there, it's awesome. The other great thing about Broome is it caters for everyone. If you're a big spender you can do expensive things such as jet boating through the Horizontal Falls, or riding camels on Cable Beach. But you can have just as much fun surfing or spending the day on the beach or just exploring what Broome has to offer. We then headed to Cable Beach to try and spot the camels but turns out didn't drive up the beach far enough. After a big day in Broome we headed back to camp for swim in the pool and a catch-up with friends we met way back at Frazer Station that had arrived at the caravan park.
