The plan today was to tour Kalgoorlie Boulder, however the full day of touring was hampered because we have all been sick with gastro. Leason learned (take note Julian). If you don't have the u-beaut filtration system in your van, don't rely on a cheap filter and a sign on a tap saying drinking water. From now on we are bitting the bullet and buying water from supermarkets. We highly suspect that the gastro came from bad water. On another note thanks everyone for the messages and texts, glad you are enjoying the blog. Kalgoorlie Boulder is two towns that have now combined into one. It was founded in 1893 after gold was discovered by a very luck bloke who stopped to change a shoe on his horse. He rode off to Collgardie to register his claim and the rest is history. Kalgoorlie Boulder once had 25 brothels but now only has one surviving. Today the main street is abundant with car dealerships, motorcycle shops and other big boy toy shops. I guess mining workers make big money and probably also spend up on these things. The most notable attraction is the mining super pit. And despite feeling terrible we a glad we saw it. It is so big it can be seen from space. We would have spent an hour just looking into it and watching the busy activities from the veiwing platform. We then went to the superpit shop and tourist centre where you can get up close with the massive machinery used in the super pit. Becuase everyone was either sick or getting sick we decided then to just drive south and see how close we could get to Esperance. I think you either love this sort of country or hate it. Our expectation was this area would be just desert, much like how you would imagine the outback. However it wasn't. At times it felt like we could have been driving from Avoca to Maryborough. The landscape is scrub and trees and more scrub and trees.
